the zero-mile diet ~ Grow Your Own

Ever since we opened the Garden Centre on the farm we have been growing organic vegetable transplants for sale. I have noticed a huge increase in the number of people interested in growing some of their own food. So, we are starting a new column on the blog dedicated to tips and ideas for the backyard vegetable plot.

Did you know that a small backyard garden, 16 feet square, can provide enough fresh vegetables for one person! Even if you do not want to grow everything yourself, there is nothing like having fresh herbs and some patio tomatoes available just outside your kitchen door.

We will be posting information about making compost, growing herb containers, growing vegetables and berries. And, of course we will still be posting the planting dates on our farm so that you will know the approximate dates to start things in your own garden.

So, think about ripping out some of that lawn and creating your own vegetable plot. It is good for the environment and good for your health!
