Due to some civic elections in Regina, the Farmers Market is not able to use the Cathedral Village Community Centre on Oct 24th. I really urge our market customers to take the short drive to the farm to purchase your veggies this weekend. We realize that many of our customers at the RFM do not own cars, or, do not want to drive outside of the city, but it is a very short (15-20min) drive.
This season has been a difficult sales season due to so many lost days at the Market. We missed 4 of the summer markets because the crops were so far behind on account of the cold summer. Then we missed a few fall markets due to snow! This is about the same as having to take a month off work without pay for those of you who are have salary positions! Or in the words of my Mexican staff – “No Bueno!!”.
So if you truly support Local Agriculture, make the trip to our farm this weekend to pick-up some delicious squash, cabbage, beets and carrots!

We attended the RFM with veggies on Wednesday, July 15th. We will now be attending regularly each week on Wednesday and Saturday until the end of the outdoor market season.
We will post the available products here each week so that you, the shoppers know what to expect.
As always, out fresh veggies are available daily at the farm too. Sometimes the lines at the RFM get to be a bit long, so if you have the time to drive out to the farm it may be worth your time.
It was great to be back at market, although it was very cold and windy! Hopefully Saturday will be better.

We have all of the onions transplanted and much of the cabbage. Wayne has seeded carrots, radish and corn. The potatoes are nearly all planted. We still have lettuce, swiss chard, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, herbs, peppers to plant and beets to seed.
The weather is still cold and it is very windy. I think the crop production will be a week or so late at time of harvest, but we will know better once it warms up and things start growing.
The garden centre is in full swing. People are finally feeling confident about planting their flower beds so plants have been swiftly moving off the benches. Our shipment of Mexican pottery was delivered yesterday so it will be unpacked by the weekend.
Saturday May 23rd will be my first go at the Farmers Market for the season. I will have cabbage, lettuce, tomato, herb, celery, and pepper seedlings and edible flowers. Someone mentioned to me that they don’t know what to do with edible flowers so I will make a info sheet about it to give away with each sale. I have a small vehicle so I will be limited with the amount I can bring into the city. All of these things are available for sale at the farm too.
We have a few WWOOFers lined up for July and hope to have the yurt set up by June 1st. Any interested wwoof volunteers should apply at least 2 weeks before their planned arrival so that we can have the cottage or yurt ready for you.
Lets all hope the weather gets better!

Well, I had planned to go to the RFM today, but looking outside, at the gusting wind and pouring rain, that is a no go! I hope the vendors that do go to market today are ready to brave the cold.
So far we have carrots, peas, corn, dill, spinach, radishes, 1/2 of the potatoes, and the strawberry plants in. This weekend we start the transplanting of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower. And then there are about 1000 new raspberry canes to go in too.
Even though the weather has not been great we are steadily moving ahead with the planting and seeding. We also have nearly completed the dismantling of the greenhouses in Moose Jaw that we are moving to the farm. And have got a handle on some of the clean-up around the yard site too.
Things in the garden centre are moving along too. Our next shipment of pottery from Mexico will be here any day now. Then we will spend a few days unpacking, taking inventory, pricing and displaying the shipment. With any luck we will have it on the shelves by the end of the weekend.
But for now, I am off to work in the rain!

Next week on May 2nd, 2009 the RFM moves to back 1900 Block Scarth Street the usual summer outdoor location. Beginning the Saturday and Wednesday schedule, from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm until October 10th, 2009.
Lincoln will start attending on May 13th we hope! We will be selling vegetable transplants and maybe some herbs too. This is the first time we have attended early markets, so we hope to have a good turn out. These veggies are the same ones we grow in the field, so you know they are going to be tasty. And since we have been growing veggies for over 3 generations, customers can be confident that we know what we are doing! Why buy your vegetable transplants from a big box when you can buy them from a vegetable farmer.
The RFM has lots of great vendors so make sure to visit everyone and get a feel for what they have to offer. And make it part of your weekly schedule.

For the first time ever, Lincoln Gardens will be attending Regina Farmers Market Spring markets!
Usually we do not attend until July, but we have received approval to sell vegetable seedlings and container gardens. I think we will begin in mid May running until mid June.
We will have onions, tomatoes, cabbage, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke, herbs, peppers and cucumbers. We will also have some tumbling tomato baskets and mixed ’salad’ gardens containers with edible flowers and lettuces.
Of course we will be selling these items on the farm in the garden centre also, as well as all your organic fertilizer needs.

Lincoln Gardens is not attending RFM yet, still a little too early for us. But this is the first year for an early spring market and there is a lot of great things available there (just not fresh field grown vegetables for awhile!).
We have recently requested the approval to attend the early markets to sell organically grown vegetable bedding plants. Last year we had a number of phone calls from people looking for veggie transplants so that they could grow their own garden. We sell these on the farm in the Garden Centre but have never been able to bring them into the city to the RFM. We hope to get approval for these and start attending RFM as early as May. I will keep you posted!
Here is the info from the Market Manager:
“In the hopes of opening year-round Markets, we are introducing Spring Markets to the Regina public. We believe that our new members have brought a wider variety of products to serve the Regina public, we are a sound environmental choice, and we can offer fresher, tastier goods. The location is convenient, offers plenty of parking for Regina residents by agreement with Cathedral Safeway, has wheelchair access, it is located on three bus routes, and the Farmers’ Market is an excellent fit with the values of the neighborhood. We are proud of the fact that we are the only growing Market in Saskatchewan; that Regina supports us whole heartedly.”
“While it may seem that Spring Markets wouldn’t offer much to the public before the growing season begins, the Regina Farmers’ Market can easily dispel that assumption by offering:
• Fresh Greenhouse vegetables
• Ranched Angus Beef ( no hormones)
• Hot lunches and coffee from our licensed kitchen starting March 21st
• Spring Lamb
• Bedding and hanging plants in April
• Baking including European Breads, cookies, pies, and ethnic foods
• Convenient frozen pre-made meals
• Jams, jellies, pickled vegetables
• Honey
• Certified Organic and Pesticide-free Fall vegetables
• Pet treats and toys
• Hand sewn household goods and clothing
• Jewelry
• Beeswax candles
• Handmade Lotions and Soaps
• Books, handmade cards
• Woodworking
• And much more…
The indoor Spring Markets are open Saturdays only from 9:30am to 1:30pm starting March 7, 2009 and ending April 25th, 2009 on the Main Floor of 2900 13th Avenue. The RFM encourages you to bring your cloth bags!”

So we had planned to go to the RFM today, but plans changed. We are now officially finished the season. A few left over squash will be delivered to non-profit agencies this week and the rest goes into storage for our own use. It has been an extra long season, the longest in the history of the farm, but it was great!
We are already faced with the task of going through seed catalogues looking for those perfect varieties to grow next year. There are so many things to choose from and decisions to make, like should we expand our selection of fun coloured veggies, or grow more heirloom tomatoes, or start growing asian veggies?? But first it is time for some much needed rest and relaxation!
cheers

We will be at the indoor market on November 22nd. From the number of phone calls we have received over the past week we figure that customers are looking for those fall veggies that go nicely with the weather we are having. It is time to make a big pot of squash soup or a yummy potato stew!
Available this week:
Squash
Potatoes (Norland & Russian Blue)
Carrots
Beets
Onions
Cabbage
Hope to see you there!
